People choose to start the new year off in a variety of ways –
Some choose to run head on into chilling waters as part of the
polar bear plunge. My husband has been a part of this tradition – it was
actually kind of cool to witness.
Some start with a resolution – maybe even a pact to tackle
something in the new year. Go to the gym, read more, work less, get out of debt….whatever
it may be, the first week of the new year is full of folks trying to make good
on their intentions.
The pastor of my church encourages the congregation to start the
new year off with a 21 day fast. The fast can be a number of things –
particular food items, habits, things that occupy a lot of our time. Either
way, the purpose of the fast is to get the heart and mind focused, in sync and
in tune with God.
There are numerous ways to start off the new year… and maybe you
have a tradition of your own. Regardless of what you do or if you do nothing… the
new year starts. No matter what there will be a January 1st and a 2nd
and a 3rd and so on… unless Jesus returns then. There isn’t anything we can do
to keep the new year from coming….so I want to offer you this tip…
Make a decision – not a resolution, but a decision – a choice to
start the new year off with intent. Don’t let the days slip by without doing
something meaningful. Make the most of 2013. Make the most of today.
But if you falter and days turn into weeks without your intent…take
heart.
For those of us who believe and love the Lord, He promises us
that His mercies are new every morning. See, with God, every day is a new day,
a fresh start. He isn't contained by a calendar and He surely isn’t hindered by
our short comings.
So the resolution or choice or decision we can make in 2013 is
to love and honor God in all we do. The rest will work itself out- and that is
a promise from God.
Speaking of promises…. Starting Jan. 2 reVision will host an
online study of God’s promises entitled – God has said, “I promise…”
